Developing the Quick-Release Pin and Receptacle: Genesis of a new product

We pride ourselves on our ability to collaborate with our strong vendor base and deliver products and last year in September, we got yet another chance to prove that, since one of our overseas customers wanted us to manufacture a premium product called the Quick Release Pin. The product is used in sports helmets, airplane luggage compartment locks, door locks and many other critical fastening operations. The heart of the product is a spring-loaded pin and socket assembly, that fits in a receptacle. The ball and socket pin is attached to one side of the fastened joint, for example, say a helmet body. The receptacle is attached to the other side, say the helmet visor. The assembly can withhold high loads and shocks, and will not come apart by itself, thus keeping the helmet wearer safe. However, in case of an emergency, if the helmet needs to be removed quickly, a release key pressed onto the Quick Release Pin will instantly disengage the Pin and the receptacle. This feature makes the Quick Release Pin and Receptacle a very attractive product for sturdy but safe release fastening applications.
The Quick Release Pin is a complex assembly of a number of precision parts, like springs precision balls, turned parts and adhesives. And one company cannot make them all. In particular, the precision balls (similar to those used in bearings) must be procured, and this particular product had stringent requirements on tolerances and hardness, that could be met only by the most expert of manufacturers. For a while, importing seemed to be the only solution, but eventually our strong contacts in manufacturing yielded a domestic solution. The pin shafts were hardened and ground, manufactured on state-of-the-art machines. All parts were heat treated for the required strength and wear resistance. In addition, the receptacle and precision balls had stringent electroless nickel plating requirements with specified thickness and hardness, and our expert plating suppliers rose to the occasion and supplied the parts withing a week. Within two weeks, we had a prototype ready, but some of the hardenable stainless steel grades were tough to procure in bulk, so we had to search down select vendors to obtain the most reliable supplier.
Add a few sleepless nights and excited days, and we had a product ready to deliver. The next stage was to deliver this at a very competent price, where again, out strong manufacturing vendor base and our cumulative manufacturing skills enabled us to quote a competent price. From concept to prototype within a month! Needless to say, our overseas customers were extremely pleased with the quality and the quoted price! A happy customer is the true reward that keeps us motivated to perform to our highest potential.
